But infusing prosthetic limbs with souls from Irminsul is a tricky process for someone like myself. Darling forced to deal with evil polycule. Then they get kidnapped with Kaz. They have stability for a little while. Then they get Ocelot again. Liquid Ocelot (who injected darling with a vial to keep them alive for, well they hoped, forever)! An entire climax in MGS4.

A break after that. They hoped.

They have already done so much. Their mental and emotional abilities are destroyed. They now have to potentially live forever unless they get killed. They have no one and nothing and need to hide because they are seen a connector to all these events.

4 years and they finally settled. Things were almost okay some days.

You end up getting abducted to Desperado Enforcement, LLC. They heard about you. Someone else wants you. So they are acting as the middle man.

Only the deal falls through because they want to keep you. You end up with a bunch of yandere cyborg mercenaries.

Mgs4 is easily the most frustrating metal gear game because it is so close to being amazing because it has some of the best stealth mechanics in the entire series and battlefield stealth is genuinely such a cool mechanic and so fucking fun.

The problem is that once the player gets access to drebins shop it completely kills the balance of the game because you basically now have infinite weapons and ammo making stealth less necessary. But at least you could just ignore the shop the bigger problem is the battlefield stealth parts of the game, you know the main concept of the game only happens in the first 2 of the 5 acts of the game after that the next 3 acts are completely different and significantly less fun and it completely kills the unique fun stealth. Battlefield sandbox the game had been up to that point.

The final boss is still amazing though and one of the best ever in my opinion.

After watching MGS4 cinematic cutscenes, I honestly believe that Bosselot is canon imo even though it was one-sided at first but I do think that BB notices Ocelot's love especially how loyal Ocelot is for him maybe after MGS3 or during MGSV. Just like BBKaz in PW for Date with Kaz

I can't imagine BBKaz or Bosselot being not canon in the Metal Gear Franchise. Same with Otasune. These couples r canon and adds depth to the franchise. The gay and queer subtext is just text imo. Kojima likes yaoi in his games.

Played some hours of MGS4 Guns of the Patriots. It’s so weird and funny. Spoilers:

Everything is happening all t he time. Ads, information, multiple screens and controls, different conversations all at once. I listened to a podcast episode about the game itself where the hosts outright said ‘I’m sure the player is on their second or third run of the game while listening to this.’ It’s 100% on purpose (the on the nose AI, tagged ID weapons, war economy, etc etc), but it’s a big change from 1-3.

Playing Rising before this added a lot more context than I would have expected. Unphazed by the moo-ing giant robots

I’m in love with Meryl’s design and her bullet earring. Such a step up from her character in 1 that still retains that same character and her efforts to be a soldier.

I’m bad at this game on normal mode and died many times. It glitched a lot in the frog unit fighting and Snake got stuck in a neverending loop of being kicked down by a frog soldier before being able to get back up <\3

Mei Ling getting a high ranked and powerful position = fantastic! Otacon saying she got it from sleeping around with older men and Snake saying he has a chance = terrible!

The B&B unit is there to be a sexy villain, literal model under their beast appearances, but I do like the concept of them transforming into beasts from war, and how Snake himself is a beast. Will Snake shed his skin and get a sexy reveal like the B&B unit? I can only hope (this is a moot point because Old Snake is already hot and sexualized)

Blue roses fit in with the beauty and the beast thing going on and Snake’s artificial and ‘determined’ fate, but my mind always goes to Twin Peaks.

Knowing Raiden will appear somewhere with a new cyborg body is now the least strange aspect about metalgear solid 4. He’s still an absent father like in Rising! How the hell does Rose get with Campbell in this game, then back to Raiden in Rising….. Worst couple award

Almost fell for Laughing Octopus being MkII/Otacon

The gameplay is closer to Snake Eater’s, but with the addition of a shop and locked weapons, and, like that game, I struggled more with switching weapons and learning the controls. It’ll probably be easier as I keep playing, but it’s taking longer to adjust and I already know I’m going to ignore 99% of the weapons. It’s also considerably less smooth than the master collections games and V, so I often miss my shot or the animation lags. Unsurprisingly, I prefer V’s that improved on pretty much everything, but I also like the simplicity and controls of the second game. Every game in between those dealt with having so many tutorials, healing/weapons to keep track of, somewhat clunky controls and cameras, etc. combined that made them feel more dated and less fun than the earlier ones.

Going to contradict myself, but Snake’s psyche bar and the various ways to keep his stress levels down is unbelievably clever and unique. So much dark sad humor when it shows up in any cutscene with Snake’s issues comically piling up. It’s not the only game to do this (Disco Elylsium is one of my favorites!), but i love its integration into the story and strange options for dealing with it. The animation of him rubbing his back if you crouch for too long or his psyche going up with back compression—it’s a stark contrast from the first game and it’s effective!

This game is ugly to look at (very desaturated). I’m also very biased towards the intense blue-green of the first two games and the style of the MG ones! However, the live action ads and blend of tech with humans/environments is very cool.

I want to see more Liquid Ocelot.

ngl my haterism died out quite a bit after a bath and dinner and I'm a bit sleepy now so I'll pick a relatively harmless opinion: as much as I love Jupiter family fanworks and I eat them up every time, I think the depiction of Snavid as doting father from the get go is heavily fanonized, because if we look at how he acts around her in mgs4 he is a lot more awkward and distant compared to the rapport she has with Hal (the one who "officially" adopts her), even if I think it's objective that he and Sunny care about each other; but he isn't effusive, open, affectionate about it. One could argue that he is awkward and distant with everyone because of his condition, but I think he is intentionally written as out of his depth as a family man -- and I think it's telling that his arc ends with him embracing being a family with Sunny and Hal (and then die). He had to get there first.

(in general, mgs fandom tends to espouse widely agreed upon fanon -- one could say because few metal gear solid fans have actually played the metal gear solid games -- and wilfully ignore a lot of the more problematic stuff that happens in the games. I wanted to elaborate more on this but as I said I'm too sleepy atp lol)

When I saw that you asked about Ocelot. barking biting this guy occupies such a big portion of my thoughts.

First impression

If we're talking VERY first the gay guy Venom splashes in the rain with. kinda awesome that he does that. (I saw the model swap of the Quiet cutscene with no context and then thought it's the original for years).

If it's about the proper introduction to the series I started with mgs3 and lost my shit at the meow. I do that now too. Together with the hand gesture and the 'I've been waiting for this' he does at the waterfall. He's a dipshit for how he treated Eva even if it was for show. I didn't see him being a triple agent coming and thought that was cool.

Impression now

I have. so many thoughts about Revolver Adam Adamska (not a real name) Shalashaska Ocelot. fuck this guy. I hate him. he makes me so sad I want to cry. want to punch him in the face. make him a nice cup of tea and let him sleep. feed him to the bears.

He was raised to be a weapon, and yet he is a creature of emotion and love that exists hand in hand with violence. He was never meant to be a person but all that he cares about are people's real names and his comrades (that aren't actually that, he's a triple agent) that Volgin kills, and animal and plants facts. He loves westerns and made them his whole personality for decades and decades. He talked to guy once and then almost burned the world down for him. A lot of times.

I find it so interesting that in v he says he plays up the idea of himself being a sadist and enjoying torture to some extent. I think the Huey interrogations show a lot of how he actually likes doing his work, which has an accent on efficiency and not blood and guts. It's simultaneously cruel and merciful, and it saves time and lives that he can use for something else. I could go on and on about this guy honestly, there are so many fascinating things about him.

Favorite moment

What isn't honestly. The meow. The revolver spin. He tried to poke Snake in his missing fucking eye?? The way he dresses in mgs1&2. also

Idea for a story

Let's see I have so many of those. The idea of Ocelot inheriting some of Sorrow's powers is really fun, I was thinking about writing about him using it for a mission with Kaz where they have to dig a dead guy up and interrogate him to get some info.

Unpopular opinion

His feelings towards bb have never been reciprocated, he has never tried to act on them, and is fine with that. him in v is the closest we ever get to seeing him being his genuine self. There is not enough information about how his hypnosis works but that's an interpretation of it that I really like. Also people seem to be really hung up on the fact that he is ""canonically"" gay when he isn't canonically anything. so I guess my unpopular opinion is not necessarily viewing him as specifically gay idk.

Favorite relationship

sigh. ocelhira. horrible terrible predictable I know. I have a big ass wall of text about them in my notes I need to finish. even the ship stuff aside, the things they were hypothetically up to during the nine year coma must have been insane. and after that? What about FOXHOUND? Or Kaz's death? So much could've happened during all of it aghhh. Even during events of v, we get so little of them together in it. Also Ocelot is a loser and has no other friends lol look at that guy. Him and Eva before mgs4 are such a cool duo though, a shame we didn't get to see any of their dynamic in that time period, or during the Patriots.

Favorite headcanon

He's on aroace spectrum. also stupidly in love with kaz miller and the reasoning for why and what and how is entirely in my head and hopefully in text at some point, it makes sense I promise. I just like when characters are in love even though I am so bad at understanding what that entails but so is he so that's fine. Their dynamic is really interesting to me.

Spoiler warning if you haven’t played MGSV or not familiar with any of the MGS games. Please keep in mind that this is my opinion and interpretation of V if you have another that’s wonderful because V’s ending has evidence to support both sides. With that said here is once again my theory on MGSV’s ending just more organized 😂 Also warning that this is long.

After 9 years of MGSV being out yeah I still think Venom is in alter ego of Big Boss’s mind. I’m not an expert so if I get anything wrong please correct me. So the ending shares that one of the things that caused Big Boss to go into a coma was a heart attack and he enters a brain dead state. This has a possibility of allowing brain damage. The medicine that Ishmael uses a “pick me up” was once used to help people who had suffered heart attacks. It is interesting to think that Big Boss and Venom’s injuries are in the same place, the head and the heart. I like to think Ishmael is a representation of Big Boss’s survival skill because seriously no one reacts to him when he makes any kind of noise. Which is odd that XOF soldiers just ignore him during their search. It is also odd that his right eye is tracking. I know some say it could be a glass eye or something and but the thing according to Para-Medic it’s ruptured and nothing has mentioned his eye being removed before or after. Even before V starts we had a snippets of Big Boss’s PTSD in the form of flashbacks and hallucinations. The famous scene of when The Boss passes and the flowers turning red is hallucination of his guilt and grief the flower petal turns white the second it leaves his hand and when he is no longer in that field. It is easy to say that is just MGS imagery but because it is MGS it probably does have something deeper going on beneath the surface. Portable Ops and Peace Walker have shown us him having intense flashbacks and in PW it actually causes him to black out once in the AI pod. We even hear a mix of voices of The Boss and her AI pod that it makes hard to tell which is the one from the pod and inside his head. The AI pod even has phantom butterflies and flower petals inside it. That imagery only stops once the pod is destroyed. He has a tendency to lie to himself when memories are too painful to recall. Like in PW he knows full well what the truth is of 3 otherwise why would he eventually go off on his own but because the truth is too painful he goes with the cover story to prove some mental release. Can you imagine how much stress he must be under in trying to keep his trauma at bay and having people to rely and look up to him. He can’t show that he is cracking. Could you lead with all the questions and doubts inside your head? It is like with the clones he knows they exist but rather than admit that he dismisses any talk of cloning because wouldn’t you if it was done without your consent. So why not pretend that they have no relation. MGS4 even mentions that something about Solid and Liquid’s DNA having differences. Also who is to say Ocelot didn’t run the test and just lied to Miller by saying that they have no relation. After all Miller knows too much about Zero and the clones to be a simple “business partner”. It would serve Ocelot well to keep him in the dark for the time being. Instead of acknowledging past betrayals cough Miller cough why not pretend they didn’t happen. Most remembered him saying “they are much sicker than that” when Ocelot mentioned them being cell grown in a lab however not 2 seconds later he tells Ocelot to treat them like everyone else. That’s such a fast switch and why. I don’t think all the tapes are truthful since we have seen Ocelot and Miller in the Paz hallucination so who is to say there isn’t more. Speaking of Paz it is forgotten that she says in PW

“I am an angel of Peace I will be watching over you” it kind of makes sense why he would think about Paz that way. Before Zeke he did seem to care about her in some way and even sounds a bit upset after the battle. Despite her angel of peace act he did eventually warmed up to her and some of her ideas.

“Fighting is the only thing I understand but this doesn’t mean I have a grudge against those who believe in peace.”-Big Boss (this really needs to be talked about more)

I also noticed she sounds oddly cutesy in the truth tapes much like the hallucination tapes. Paz only sounds like that when she is undercover and drops it when she doesn’t have to hide anymore like her diary or Ground Zeroes tapes. So why is she doing the young voice when talking to Zero? It is strange unless it is a clue that V is still not being honest. The credits in V and the timeline also are a bit strange like Kiefer Sutherland being credited as Snake but not as Big Boss yes they share the same code name but if they are different why not credit them differently that’s like calling Big Boss and Solid Snake Old Snake you would be kinda of right but still wrong. The timeline says Big Boss’s Phantom ok if Venom is his own character why not call him Venom, use the player’s name, or heck call him Ahab as we hear from time to time. Why phantom? It sounds very vague.

In MG2 SS there is a codec you can read that talks about the rest of Big Boss’s limbs and right ear becoming cybernetics and MGS4 talks about rebuilding his body. We don’t know what that rebuilding means but the novel and database do lean into that rumor being true.

I also have some interesting snippets of Skull Face also being a potential alter ego even though I go back and forth with it but impossible to ignore. Skull Face and Big Boss have the same past. In the “unofficial” official Big Boss is a third generation Japanese American in Hawaii and became an orphan during WW II. You could go far as to say we don’t know what language he grew up using, a mix of Japanese and English or if one was more favored over the other. Skull Face is Hungarian and also became an orphan during a war. Skull Face is referred to as a ghost without a past well who does that sound like? Big Boss will not tell the other characters about his past other than The Boss. Heck as the player you actually have to dig around for it in the wiki or databases. Even the name John Doe is a reference to an unknown male. He is very much our ghost without a past. Skull Face has an odd interest in The Boss that only shows up when we are in the jeep with him and even holds onto some of her possessions.

Last night on P3R: middle-school SEES, struggling with my social calendar, the Abyss of Time, questionable movie choices, and oh god we finished Sunset and now I’m hitting sad stuff in everything else I’m playing/watching too.

I’m still in Tartarus from last time, so I can knock out a few more floors before we go home. I’ve been introduced to a new thing, though, and it’s a Big Hand!

I kind of love how goofy the hands are. They do a little dance and sometimes it syncs up with the music. ^_^

After that, it’s time for the next gatekeeper floor! And it’s--

Anyway, Mitsuru is very worried about Shinji. He wants to extend his leave of absence from school again even though he’s come back to the dorm. So I guess he’s been absent for two years now? She really wants him to re-enroll, though. She, Akihiko, and Shinji were the only three members of SEES originally, back when the three of them were in middle school.

Apparently they could barely handle the first floor of the tower, which… They were children, so I’m not surprised. No adult supervision, either, and Mitsuru only had minor navi powers. I’m surprised none of them got killed. At least Ken has all of us who’ve already learned to fight to keep him safe.

They promised that they’d all graduate high school together, which explains why Mitsuru is so invested. She clearly cares about both of them a lot.

You can hand over the extension form here, but there’s also the option to hold onto them and go find Shinji to talk again. So… I guess you can literally just end the events there if you choose to not take the form back and go pry.

So, according to Q, Minato was feeling well enough that the team went to Tartarus last night. And Igor left the Velvet Room at some point, making it unstable enough to crash the elevator into the Abyss of Time. Apparently it’s not just the Abyss that no one remembers. They don’t seem to remember the instigating trip to Tartarus either.

Weird. But understandable I guess.

Anyway I missed two days of possibly playing my MMO all day. You could have at least showed me my teammates checking on me!

I started mgs4 today and I am flabbergasted how little concern anyone has for Raiden.

Exchange killed me! No one ever told Snake, who at least has the decency to sound upset over the situation. And, like, sure, they weren't besties, so why bother giving him the news, but Otacon and Rosemary don't even bring him up at all on codec calls after! I only got far enough to hear Raiden on codec, I really do wonder what the characters' reactions will be to seeing him! I hope there's a little more concern there when he pops back up lol

Thoughts on MGS4 graveyard scene and post credits scene?

well the snake graveyard scene was super cool at first, i think the cinematography with snake there by himself with the gun in his mouth had a lot of cool moments and frames… and not sure if by post credits you mean the first fakeout before the like 20 minute big boss graveyard cutscene or the post credit audio with otacon so ill give you both 🙏

the big boss graveyard scene was also very cool at first bc i was like WOAHHH BIG BOSS… (<-already knew exactly what was going to happen) but it definitely went on for too long like immediately after that LMFAO i did Not want another tell dont show monologue over a series of jpegs in the last like. ten minutes of the game and the way big boss took forever to die from FOXDIE was annoying as hell omfg he kept keeling over and dying only to come back and regurgitate the same spiel about how there shouldn’t be snakes in the world anymore

i did think the fact that he somehow just Had zero there with him in a wheelchair and made a whole big deal about turning off his life support was kind of hilarious though like what the hell was that

as for the post credits audio with snake and otacon DONT even talk to me about it. don’t even like. don’t

(i also have heard that bit a billion times before but it still hit crazy style getting to hear it for myself. for as much as people love to act like snake died immediately after mgs4 i think it’s really sweet that otacon was basically like Um me and sunny are your family so we’re coming with you Are You Stupid)

anyway that’s some of my thoughts for now my brain feels like a soup rn so i’ll probably share more another time but. yeah

PS i’ll be honest i didn’t think the longest cutscene in a video game ever felt all that long at least up until the big boss monologue i was really digging it (more than some other cutscenes in the game at least)

so i finished mgs3 for the first time in years, it easily stays in my favorite games of all time. yet, i feel kind of mixed about its design now.

unless you don't know how stealth works or are very aware of how everything in the game works, it really feels like the absolute most optimal way to play the game ...is to just not play any of it. everything in the way the game is designed points to just crawling around, avoiding absolutely every single interaction you can have with the level design outside of 'funny camo index go up' every once in a while. i feel like the stakes are way too high for this game and the two that came after it as there's seemingly not as much room for figuring out how to experiment as with mg through mgs2 since you have almost no way of seeing enemies outside of sight (they are camouflaged) and vauge indicators much less knowing how safe you are from being spotted. i know this is an intensional design choice, but it really does just feel like an arbitrary limitation they added for realism they never could figure out how to compromise well with until mgsv. especially since mgs3 and 4 are games with very few hiding spaces, since your camo is supposed to be your "hiding space"

i think maybe most of my problems come from this being a game i've played before though. i'm too familiar with it to rush into things, but i'm also not familiar enough to know how anything works with it. i tried to do way to many things in this playthrough (i mean i did a full non-lethal playthrough for christ's sake, you are NOT supposed to do that if you aren't doing a special run) and i payed the "I didn't have as much fun as i could have" price. i think i'm willing to give myself another try at it, especially considering i literally have already lol, i actually started different save on subsistence around the time i got to graniny gorki on the master collection. i'll probably do a replay of it for a bit before i set up my ps3 to do mgs4 and pw.

also side note but i tried out a ds3 controller for the last part of mgs3 because my pro controller needed to charge, and i absolutely hate that i enjoyed using it. what happened to me, man. maybe it really was a good controller this whole time but the shitty game stop controller that came with it when i bought it just poisoned my mind about it so bad for so long. that and i kinda hate using the ps3 so its probably like controller ptsd too. i still think the design of the triggers, the cheap plastic feel, and the finicky charging still suck farts out of a dracula playing a saxophone tho, so that hasn't changed 🤗

FIRST IMPRESSION:

No but seriously I love Otacon lol His entire existence feels like a perpetual wedgie and it's so sad to see, let the man have SOMETHING Kojima! I get why the war criminals need to be punished but why him?! I'm not gonna lie though, I find him a bit bland, and it's also by design, he's the closest we have to the every man, but yeah. I think like many Kojima characters what really gives him depth is everything we're not shown. It's almost easy to dismiss Otacon until to remember that this is Huey's son, that his mother is Strangelove, who considered him hers and the Boss's son, it's wild when you stop to think about it.

FAVORITE MOMENT:

A classic: "Are you an otaku too?" It's a really funny line, but it says so much about him that he says that. Snake tells him he works alone, and Otacon basically answers with "do you feel alone as well?" It's just precious and pretty sad.

IDEA FOR A STORY:

I think something exploring what happened to him after Snake died and Sunny left. Snake says he's tougher than he looks but I'm not so sure, and it sucks not knowing if he managed to find some durable happiness somewhere.

UNPOPULAR OPINION:

This one will for sure be unpopular: I'm not the biggest fan of Christopher Randolph's interpretation of him. I think he lays it on way too thick. Like Debi Mae West (Meryl) it gets better in MGS4, but I always thought his voice fitted better for Huey, which I can't really explain but whatever.

FAVORITE RELATIONSHIP:

With Snake of course. To be honest I'm not a big otasune shipper, I need a lot more spice in my ships lol But I find them very cute, they're good for each other, whether as friends or as a ship.

FAVORITE HEADCANON:

I like fanarts where Otacon makes Snake play games with him or shows him anime and stuff, because I think he would use that a lot to try to communicate at first if that makes sense? You don't have to be a full fledged otaku for that, I think anyone who's been isolated for some period of time with games/movies/shows/book might forget how to human and relate to people other than via their interests. A friend of mine is basically like that, he lacks life experience so he relates via references to media he consumes, and I think Otacon would do that a lot.
